Concert for Japan was initiated by artist and social activist David Kam, after he saw a tweet from Bryan Adams asking someone to organize a world concert to help Japan.
Prior to seeing the tweet, David had just found out that one of his best friends who lives in Sendai had part of her house destroyed and was living in a washroom, while another elderly friend was almost swept out to sea clinging for dear life to the top of a small countertop for 2 days.
Using the concept of love without borders, artist David Kam then contacted Abbey Neidik, award-winning film director, to see what they could do. Jackie Wartanian and Lara Teperdijan of Center Stage Management and Scorpio International were recruited to produce the concert, along with a team of highly successful professionals from the music industry, the visual arts world, lawyers, marketing professionals and green activists.
FT Island headline the first day, — marking the K-pop band’s first time in North America — and DJ Paul Oakenfold, DJ Roger Sanchez and DJ Karl Wolf tops the second day’s bill. Sam Tsui (with surprise guest Kurt Schneider) the Internet sensation with over 240 million views on Youtube is also making his first festival debut in Toronto.
Day one will also included rock and indie artists Abandon All Ships, The Envy, Atomic Tom, Evaline, Vas Vega and traditional Japanese drummers Yaudo. Day two, meanwhile, is dedicated to dance and pop such as Sam Tsui, DJ P4L4DiN, Ricky J, and The Devil Concubines. An added attractions are a suspended bar eight stories above the crowd and a zip line, as well as a DJ battle and a “cosplay” anime/manga costume contest.
Actor/Comedian Orny Adams, of MTV’s Teen Wolf and the comedy worlds “go to guy” says, “I’m extremely excited and honoured to be hosting Concert for Japan and helping raise money for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami. Come out with friends and enjoy two days of music, dance, and hopefully some laughter provided by me”.
